Art Trek

(Personal Statement)

These days, I'm keeping a wary and weathered eye on Devon - the part of Britain I've always loved the most, not least because it's made a painter of me. I was born in the south east and I've seen what modern life has done for that other beloved county, Kent, still discernible beneath the crushing tide of concrete and traffic and civic disdain. Devon must not go the same way. North Devon is the bit that counts for me, where the Atlantic hits and sends the salt and shards way up into the massive skies and over the great green landscapes where nature still finds a way in, despite the giant arms of the spraying machines and the opportunist compounds of unaffordable boxes. As the poet said, long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.

Well, my own painting is about wishful thinking after all. It is about space and colour and freedom to travel. Everything, in fact, which seems to be under threat. Recently I watched an extraordinary film, 'Life is Beautiful'. And so it is. Art should be too.
